Markbygden Vind AB applied for and was granted permission to build and operate 12 wind turbines at Dragaliden in 2008, south of Strömnäs within the municipality of Piteå. Permission was granted in February and the building permit issued in March 2008. The company Dragaliden Vind AB began construction of the wind farm in the autumn of 2008, and the first two wind turbines were commissioned at the end of 2009. The remaining ten wind turbines were erected in summer 2010 and the entire wind farm with a rated capacity of 24MW commissioned in December of the same year.

Dragaliden has the character of a pilot project, generating a wealth of experience ahead of the major Markbygden 1101 project, including:
• Cold-climate conditions for wind farm operations
• Future training and workforce requirements
• Potential industrial establishment needs for wind power components

The pilot wind farm has also given the relevant parties the opportunity to form their own view of the impact of wind turbines on the surrounding area.
